Laboring and Birth

Preparations for Birth

I enrolled in several classes to mentally & physically for our child’s birth. On the right column there are a few options for Prenatal Yoga. Magee Women’s Hospital of UPMC has a plethora of classes to partake. Some have fees attached and others are free, such as Car Seat Safety Check and It Is Easy Being Green. We greatly benefited from the preparations practiced during the Preparing For Childbirth.

Laboring

At home I labored using the following strategies and tools:

  •  Posing and moving while seated on Exercise Ball
  •  Listening to prepared Playlists categorized by themes of energy, relaxation, focused concentration, etc.
  • Using focal point of our dog (photographed and chanting dog's name... sounds bizarre but it helped me through contractions!)
  • Pacing/walking during early contractions
  • Attempting to stay hydrated... drinking water or chewing ice chips (easier to do amidst contractions)
  • Talking to family/friends... in person and using cell phone
  • Creating family memories... finalizing baby's book of narratives/photographs
  • Watching a movie was too difficult because of sitting still for too long (Sherlock Holmes from local Redbox)
  • Breathing techniques WITH my partner
  • Squeezing a stress ball
  • Visualization
  • Praying
Other ideas are...
  • Cleaning
  • Washing laundry
  • Taking a shower/bath
Check out my blog for several books that family and friends recommended for us to prepare for laboring and birth.

What else helped you through laboring and the birth?

For those currently expecting a child(ren)... what other strategies are you planning to try during labor and how are you preparing for birth?
